Learning Tools for Gathering Information
top

  • USF blog: This blog is available at no additional cost to USF students. Read about blogs here...it is important to have a plan for the use of your blog and to monitor it on a daily basis. The idea of using a blog is to gather feedback from others.

  • 21 Publish: This is an open source tool for setting up a blogging community.

  • email: One of the most common sources of information is your own email. Email is used as a social navigation tool, but the amount of information gathered can be quickly overwhelming if you don't have a plan to organize the information. It is important to eliminate unwanted materials on a daily basis to keep your email from filling up, and to move information that you do want into folders to make retrieval easier.

  • Online Survey Code: This is the code to post in your blog for the Blog Activity in P5_WebQuest. This code places an online survey in your blog for the students in your collaborating classroom to complete.
  • Student Interests Survey Results: This link retrieves the information from the Student Interests Survey.

Learning Tools for Organizing Information

  • Open Source Resources for Organizing
    • CMaps: An open source concept mapping tools similar to Inspiration.

    • Free Mind: Open source concept mapping tool that I understand is easier to use than CMaps...I haven't tried it yet.
  • Free Trials
    • Inspiration: Free 30 day Trial Offer. Cost is $80+ after the trial expires. Inspiration will be available in the USF EME2040 classrooms and the open labs in the College of Education beginning with Spring semester 2007.

  • Open Source ePortfolio Systems

    • Epsilen ePortfolio System and Learning Community: Anyone with a university system email can join this learning community. There is an ePortfolio system, as well as a blog and content storage system. I like this one because it provides various access options for different groups of users. The developer of this site is Ali Jafari, who is a well-known name in the ePortfolio community. Dr. Jafari appears to monitor this site on a fairly regular basis.

  • Limited Access Resources for Organizing
    • BlackBoard Content Collection

    • ChalkandWire ePortfolio: ChalkandWire is the ePortfolio system implemented by the USF College of Education in Spring of 2006 for accreditation reporting purposes. Students enrolled in participating programs in the USF College of Education are required to purchase a subscription to ChalkandWire at a cost of $45 for the first year, and to create and maintain an assessment portfolio. The assigments included in the assessment portfolio are predetermined by the program faculty to show evidence of addressing national teaching and learning standards for that program, as defined by NCATE and the DOE. Renewal subscriptions may be purchased after graduation that provide access to unlimited secure webspace for a nominal fee. The system allows for the creation of multiple ePortfolios for a variety of purposes, and the user authoring interface is much more flexible than BlackBoard's 'My Portfolio' component.

    • Wikis

      • pbwiki: This is the Peanut Butter wiki - very user friendly. I like it because the user input can be in html as well as text. The free version has advertising.

      • wikispaces: This is a good one also, although I don't think it is as user friendly as pbwiki, and the server doesn't accept HTML input.

      • 21publish...Haven't used this one too much. I think it's more of a blog community.

    • Open Source Webspace

      • googlepages.com: You need a gmail account with Google to use this one, but the email account (gmail) is free and registration is fast.

Here are some sites that my students have used:

    • freewebs

    • geocities: This one has been around quite awhile...you can get a free website and free blog. It is owned by yahoo.
